What is rowing and why do we recommend you to go see it? 

Know the details of this interesting aquatic sport that will be carried out in San Pedro de la Paz between April 15th and 20th during the Rowing Pre Pan American. This instance will be a Santiago 2023 test event.

Rowing is one of the aquatic sports that are trained outdoors and it’ll be part of the Santiago 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games, the most important multisport event of the Americas in Chile for the first time in its history. 

At the same time, there will be a second test event called Rowing Pre Pan American Competition that  will provide quotas for the maximum continental event. The tests will take place between April 15th and 20th at the Laguna Grande of San Pedro de la Paz, Concepción, and it’s expected that 220 athletes from 24 countries participate.

1. Rowing is an outdoor sport and both weather and water conditions are relevant factors that the crews have to deal with to achieve their best performance.

2. Rowing consists in pushing a boat with oars along a 2,000 m straight water track.

3. Unlike canoe sprint, where the athletes are facing towards the finish line, rowers are facing backwards in the direction of the movement.

4. Before being an Olympic discipline, rowing was a transport developed by millenary cultures such as ancient Egypt where it was used for different kinds of activities: trade, transport, and war. It’s believed that the first regatta (nautical competition) was carried out in Italy. In fact, the word has its origins in “regattare” that means “competing to obtain an award.”

5. Apart from a great physical strength, success in rowing is also thanks to the technique and teamwork to achieve top speed and distance with each stroke. A rower or the teams must manage their race to perfection, making sure of having enough energy during the whole competition and lead the race.
