What is Boccia and why you should go watch it

We’re nearly two weeks from the beginning of the Boccia 2023 World Challenger, which will be carried out in Santiago, and we’ll tell you everything about Boccia and why to attend to watch it.

From June 26th to July 2nd of this year it’ll be carried out the Santiago 2023 World Boccia Challenger at the Centro Comunitario de Lo Espejo, a Boccia international championship that will be the prelude for our #Santiago2023 Parapan American Games.

WHAT IS BOCCIA?

#Boccia is a male and female sport in which it’s possible to compete in mixed modalities both in couples or teams.

  • Singles: BC1 male and female, BC2 male and female, BC3 male and female, and BC4 male and female.

  • Teams: BC1/BC2.

  • Couples: BC3 and BC4.

Six colored boccias are played per team, couple, or athlete. The objective of the game is throwing the balls of your color to a white ball, and at the same time, blocking the way to your rival with your boccias, so game strategy is essential.

SPORT CLASSIFICATION

In Boccia, Para athletes who compete are part of one of the four sport classes:

  • BC1: athletes have severe movement limitations that affect their legs, arms, and torso; they usually use an electric wheelchair. People who belong to this sports class throw the ball with their hand or foot.

  • BC2: athletes throw the ball only with the hand. They have physical impairment of cerebral origin, and a better function of their torso and arms than people from BC1 classification. Often, the above allows athletes to throw the ball above and under their heads with a variety of grabs, without requiring assistance on court.

  • BC3: athletes have severe impairment of any origin that affects the functionality of arms, torso, or even head; this impedes their throw capacity in an independent way. It's necessary to use a ramp and to have a sports assistant. This sport class is the one with less functional capacity.

  • BC4: this class groups athletes with physical impairment that don’t have a cerebral origin that affects their coordination, torso, and arms control. Their function grade allows them to throw and carry out their competition activities without assistance.

WHY SHOULD YOU GO WATCH IT?

#DidYouKnowThat along with Goalball, Boccia is the only sport that doesn’t have a conventional version in the Olympic Games.

Boccia is the sport that gathers the most severe impairment grades, that’s why it offers great opportunities to the athletes that participate in high performance sport inside the Paralympic world.

Facing the biggest multisport event of the Americas and in Chilean history, we’ll test our sport precincts to receive 15 countries and 69 Para athletes in competition.
