President Boric at the Public Account: “We’re sure that Santiago 2023 will be a source of unforgettable memories”

The President called the community to join the Pan American and Parapan American Games and pointed to the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, gave last Thursday the Public Account in the National Congress and among diverse topics and announcements, he highlighted the organization for the first time in the country of the Pan American and Parapan American Games, between October and November.

In the Senate, with the presence of more than 800 guests, including the former President Michelle Bachelet and the Sport Minister Jaime Pizarro, the President said that "we’re sure that Santiago 2023 will be a source of unforgettable memories, of moments that, like the '62 World Cup, the Copa America 2015 or the feats of great athletes like Kristel Köbrich or Marlene Ahrens, will remain etched in the memory of future generations and in the sports history of our country."

The reference to the football tournament was reiterated when he referred to the "spirit" of Carlos Dittborn, one of the leaders who insisted on hosting the competition after the Valdivia earthquake in 1960. "It’s not easy to organize an event of this magnitude, but the country must know that we’re acting decisively to overcome all the difficulties and ensure an organization that meets the highest standards of efficiency and transparency," he indicated.

THE PAN AMERICAN GAMES AND THE PROJECTION TO THE WORLD CUP 2030

The Pan American and Parapan American Games will bring together in the country more than 8,000 athletes and Para-athletes from 41 countries of the American continent, an instance that was highlighted by the President. "We’ll host the greatest sports festival in the continent and one of the most important in the world, where Chileans and people from the Americas will be able to look each other face to face and feel part of the same community. This is the way to build a homeland", he stressed.

He also added that: "that is why we want all of Chile, from Arica to Magallanes, and especially boys and girls, to join this sports festival. That they not only attend their competitions and events in the cities, but that they follow them through the media and that we’re able to replicate them in their neighborhoods and schools."

The speech of the President on sports was aimed at hosting another great event: the FIFA 2030 World Cup along with Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay. "The story doesn’t end here. The quality with which we fulfill the organization of the Games will be one more step on the road that, I hope, will lead us to become the host of the World Cup", he concluded.

Santiago 2023 is nearly 142 days away and it will leave a valuable sports, social, urban and environmental legacy. Among the works that stand out are the Parque Deportivo Estadio Nacional, the largest in South America, and the Athletes' Village, which will later be converted into housing for 1,355 families in Cerrillos district, to the southwest of the capital.
