#DidYouKnowThat in Chile nearly 17 millions of tons of solid waste per year are generated?

The numbers, presented by the media dedicated to environmental topics Codex Verde, show evidence of one of the highest contamination rates in Latin America, where none of the countries located in the region surpasses the 15% of recycling material.

From the #Santiago2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games we seek to reduce the environmental impact during the development of the event as much as we can. In terms of waste use, recycling is one of our main measures.

WHAT IS RECYCLING?

Recycling is the transformation of a material already used and destined to be discarded into a new product with the possibility of a second use, so as to reduce the environmental impact and its excessive use.

• It reduces the amount of waste.

• It saves natural resources.

• It saves energy.

• It reduces the contamination and environmental impact.

• It generates employment.

How to recycle?

• Do research about what kind of materials are recyclable.

• Separates materials by its types (glass, plastic, cans, carton).

• Wash and dry materials before recycling.

• Put the materials in the appropriate containers near your home, available at work or at the established clean points in your community.

• Organic waste can be recycled if you have a compost bin at home.

• Be careful of hazardous waste.

• Reduce the use of non-recyclable materials in your daily life.

• Avoid the use of disposable products and printers.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR OUR GAMES?

We have integrated waste management processes for the 26 venues of Santiago 2023, which will make it possible to recover more than 80% of the waste generated at the Games.

In addition, this management will be extended to the recycling of more than 700 tons of brand image materials.

These are the measures by #Santiago2023:

• 80%+ recycling during the Games.

• 700+ tons of brand image materials recycled.

• 90%+ recyclable materials for brand image.

• 120+ tons of guano as organic matter will be composted.

• 50%+ pet plastic recycling.
