Squash

Squash is a racket sport where two (single) or four (doubles) players practice in a court with four walls and a small rubber ball.

Players take turns hitting the ball with their rackets on the playable surfaces on the walls. The objective of the game is to hit the ball in such a way that the opponent cannot hit it back. There are about 20 million people in over 185 countries worldwide that regularly play squash.

History of this sport

Squash dates back to the 19th century, it was played in London’s prisons. Around 1830, students at Harrow School noticed that a ball thrown against the wall offered more variety to the game. Later, the game spread to other schools.

In the 20th century, the game rose in popularity with various schools and clubs building squash courts, but with no set dimensions.

In 1904 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the world's first national squash association was founded, today known as US Squash.

Squash rackets have changed in a similar way to tennis rackets. In the 1980s, their manufacture shifted from laminated wood to lighter materials (such as aluminum and graphite) with minor additions of components such as boron and titanium. Natural gut strings were also replaced by synthetic strings. Today rackets weigh around 140g.

Squash was admitted to the Pan American Games from the edition held in Mar del Plata, in 1995.

The Canadian team leads the medal table with 13 golds.

How do you play?

It is played on a 9.75 x 6.40 m court, which can be made of glass, in which athletes put all their effort to reach the corners and direct the shots according to their strategy.

In squash it is important to think through the moves during the match, which is the reason why many call it "the chess of racket sports". The competition formats are singles, doubles and team. All of them require high precision and physical condition to keep the ball in play. It is a sport that exercises the whole body and amuses everyone who practices it.
