From April 28 to May 8, the Argentine city will receive 2,500 athletes who could become protagonists of the southern countries at the Pan American Games Santiago 2023, Barranquilla 2027 or the following edition.

Rosario is getting ready to welcome the youth athletes from South America in the third version of the South American Youth Games, which will take place between April 26th and May 8th in this city, located in the southeast of the Santa Fe province, in Argentina. Athletes from across the subcontinent are coming together for a new sports festival and this is what you need to know about it.

WHAT ARE THE SOUTH AMERICAN YOUTH GAMES?

They are a multi-sport, educational and cultural event organized by the South American Sports Organization (Odesur) for athletes from 14 to 18 years old, and it takes place one year before the Youth Olympics. Rosario will be the third edition -initially scheduled for 2021, but postponed due to covid-, after Lima 2013 and Santiago de Chile 2017.

HOW MANY ATHLETES AND SPORTS WILL BE PRESENT AT ROSARIO 2022?

2,500 athletes from 15 countries will be part of this activity. The program includes 26 sports: track and field, badminton, 3×3 basketball, cycling, beach handball, boxing, climbing, fencing, futsal, artistic gymnastics, hockey 5s, judo, karate, weightlifting, Olympic wrestling, swimming, artistic roller skating, roller speed skating, rugby sevens, skateboarding, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, archery, triathlon and beach volleyball.

There will be nine disciplines making their debut at the Games: beach handball, climbing, futsal, hockey 5s, artistic roller and roller speed skating, rugby sevens, skateboarding and archery. But at the same time, there are some disciplines that were present before, but will be absent this time: canoeing, rowing, sailing and golf.

WHICH COUNTRIES WILL PARTICIPATE?

There will be 15 countries in competition: Argentina, Aruba, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Curaçao, Ecuador, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela.

WHAT WILL BE THE VENUES AT ROSARIO 2022?

The Unico Sudamericano park will be the center of action with 7 clusters (group of venues) and 17 venues. These are:

  • Hippodrome: rugby sevens, archery and hockey 5s
  • La Rural: Pavilion A - taekwondo, fencing and karate; Pavilion B - table tennis, judo and weightlifting; Pavilion C - boxing and Olympic wrestling; and Arena Stadium: beach volleyball and beach handball.
  • Paseo 21: climbing, skateboarding and 3x3 basketball.
  • Municipal Stadium “Jorge Newbery”: “Luis Brunetto” Track – track and field; “Roberto Tagliabué” skating rink - artistic roller and roller speed skating.
  • Lake: triathlon and cycling route.
  • Provincial: "Salvador Bonilla" Indoor Stadium - futsal and artistic gymnastics; and tennis on outdoor courts.
  • Newell's: "Dr. Claudio L. Newell” Indoor Stadium – badminton; and Natatorium – swimming.

 

WHO IS THE MASCOT?

The symbol of the III South American Youth Games is a tero bird called Tete, which is commonly seen flying over the Argentine pampas. The mascot evokes "Teru Teru", who was the mascot at the II Cruz del Sur Games in Rosario 1982.
