We have enjoyed intense days with sports, medals, great world records and exciting finals in the Olympic Games, and now it’s time to get ready to receive the excitement and emotions the Paralympic Games can give us, starting officially on August 24th through September 5th.

In the Games, we will be able to see 22 sports, and watch legends such as Daniel Dias from Brazil, who has also been present in the Pan American Games, and has won gold medals; the United States athletes, Jessica Long and McKenzie Coan, who will aim to add more swimming medals to their collections; the German Paralympic Champion Marcus Rehm, who is defending his title in long jump, and Iranian Zahra Nemati – two times Paralympic champion – who returns to the stage’s spotlight in Tokyo 2020

Among other noteworthy athletes we have Jordanne Whiley (wheelchair tennis) from the Great Britain Team, and Japanese Sato Tomoki (Para-Athletics, marathon) – who won two silver medals in Rio 2016.

Among other Americas’ athletes to watch, we have Kiara Rodríguez who is aiming for her first gold medal for Ecuador in T47 long jump, in her debut in the Paralympic Games.

22 sports to enjoy

In these Games’ novelties, Shooting Para-sport makes its comeback to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Program, along two sports that debuted in Rio: Canoe and Triathlon.

Wheelchair basketball is ready to show us an exciting duel between Great Britain and Team USA - bronze and gold medalists from Rio 2016 – drawn for a face off, while in wheelchair rugby, the world’s number 3, Japan, is campaigning for their first Paralympic title facing the current champion Australia.

Two new sports have been added to the Tokyo 2020 program: Para-Badminton and Para Taekwondo, which will start on September 1st and 2nd, respectively.

New disciplines have also been added. Para canoeing will be a part of the Paralympic program for the first time, as well as the mixed 50m prone SH2 in Shooting Para Sport. Also, Para-rowing will use the same distance as its Olympic counterpart – 2000m -.

Just as the Olympic Games, we will follow the highlights and exploits of the Americas’ athletes, hoping to live with the same excitement the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games.
