Although 2020 has been a complex year, the work of Santiago 2023 has not stopped. The Santiago 2023 Corporation, responsible for organizing the next Pan American and Parapan American Games, has carried out social, sports and cultural tasks that have marked its work throughout 2020. We invite you to review them below.
During the first months of the pandemic, the government launched the "Food for Chile" program that delivered solidarity boxes to the families most in need. Santiago 2023, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports (MINDEP) joined this cause and together with the help of BYD and athletes from Team Chile, the electric vehicles were charged and the food boxes were delivered to the families.
During most of the year the 100% electric bus from Santiago 2023 traveled the streets of Santiago. We transported the Chilean Rugby team, arrived at the activities carried out by the organization in the Metropolitan Park and facilitated the transfer of health officials from Buin district to the Dr. Exequiel González Cortés Hospital. This last action was carried out thanks to the alliance between BYD, the Municipality of Buin, Enel X, METBUS and with the support of MINDEP.
Undoubtedly, the bus helped hospital staff and our athletes, since in addition to fulfilling a social role, the environment is cared for and health and sanitary conditions are protected.
December 16th was the day that Santiago 2023 confirmed the long-awaited sports program, which includes 38 sports and 57 disciplines in the Pan American Games, while the Parapan American Games will host 17 sports and 18 disciplines. Although the figures do not vary in relation to those of the last edition of Lima 2019, Santiago 2023 brings two important novelties on its program: Climbing and Para Archery.
The start of the construction of the Pan American and Parapan American Village that will be built in the Cerrillos district is getting closer and closer. The project that is currently in a bidding process, expects to receive the award results next year and thus begin to build the dream of 1,137 apartments, of which 317 will be accessible.
This Village will house athletes and Para athletes, who will reside for two weeks and share with athletes from other countries, and once the Games are over, these apartments will be delivered to the district as social housing, thus being able to cover 60% of the Cerrillos district housing needs.
In September, the president of Panam Sports, Neven Ilic; the Minister of Sports, Cecilia Pérez; the president of the COCH, Miguel Ángel Mujica; the CEO of Santiago 2023, Felipe De Pablo and the captain of “Las Diablitas”, Camila Caram met at the National Stadium Park to review the progress of the first public field hockey pitches in the country. The complex will have two official sports fields and they hope to be ready before the Pan American Games.
Throughout the year, Santiago 2023 spoke with prominent athletes and national and international Para athletes about their time in Lima 2019, their expectations of the event and their relationship with sport. Among the prominent names are the No. 2 wheelchair tennis player in the world, Gustavo Fernández; the Chilean shooter and Pan-American multi-medalist, Francisca Crovetto and the young promise of Para Swimming, Vicente Almonacid.
On two occasions, Santiago 2023 and part of the Chilean Athletic Federation team came to the Plaza Centenario of the Metropolitan Park in order to promote responsible sports. The Santiago 2023 team was in charge of encouraging park visitors and giving them masks so that they continue to take care of themselves while practicing sports, while athletes held athletic contests and demonstrations.
In October and November, the Joined By A Passion campaign was held, celebrating the 3 years remaining for the Santiago 2023 Pan American and Parapan American Games. The campaign reported on the progress made by the organizing committee throughout the year and invited people to be part of this great event under the #TodosRumboALosJuegos #EveryoneTowardsTheGames hashtags.
