South American School Games: the first event that will enjoy the infrastructure legacy of Santiago 2023

The competition, which has just ended in Paraguay, will be held in Chile next year after the Pan American and Parapan American Games.

Chile is preparing to host several important sport events at a continental level next year, since not only the Pan American and Parapan American Games will take place but also our country was chosen to be the venue for the South American School Games.

The news was announced in Asunción, Paraguay, in the framework of the 2022 edition of the event that was suspended for two years due to the pandemic. This time, it gathered 1,430 athletes between 12 and 14 years old from 10 countries to compete in 11 sports.

The Minister of Sport, Alexandra Benado, was named president of Consejo Suramericano del Deporte (Consude) and received the baton at the closing ceremony. “Next year, we will have the honor to host the Santiago 2023 Games and we will be waiting for all athletes with a tremendous legacy in infrastructure,” she said.

CHILE WON 13 GOLD MEDALS

The Chilean delegation was formed by 161 athletes and 10 para athletes getting a total of 49 medals: 13 gold, 14 silver, and 22 bronze.

“When I won the gold medal I was very excited and happy. The truth is, the real aim was to lower the marks and that turned out better than expected. Being in the South American Games has been a beautiful experience because of the support I have received and for sharing with teammates from other sports and countries,” said the national swimmer Antonia Romero.

The South American School Games have been held since 1991 and the 27th version will take place in Santiago, Chile. This will be the fifth time the country hosts this event after Viña del Mar 1992, Temuco 2000, Talca 2002, and La Serena-Coquimbo 2007.
